Agent Cindy enjoys an
island breeze
from the beach.
Island Breeze
A Summer Mini Novel
by Annette J Davis

Chapter One

It is opening day at Island Breeze.
I’d think I would be
the first to arrive.

However, Store Clerk Chunji
is already there,
beaming a wide grin at me
and holding the wooden
storefront door wide open.
“ Good morning, Chunji. “
I gleam.
“ Good morning, Mum. “
he responds.
He serves me fresh shrimp
and a sweet papaya juice.
“ Ah, Chunji!
You didn’t have to. “
“ I insist, Mum.
I make the juice myself. “
I smile and head
to the back porch.
It is a day
that has been much anticipated.
We are secretly on the ocean.
The sand is so white!
I see nothing but water
and seagulls.

I savor the flavor in my glass.
“ Mum! Come see.
We have our first customer! “
I quickly set breakfast aside
and hurry back in.
I hear the sound of the little bell
over the door.
In walks Keisha!
“ Well, hello, Keisha.
How are you today? “
“ I am here to help, Mama. “
She gently lays
her wide brim beach hat
upon the counter.
“ Help? Oh, how nice. “
“ What can I do? “
“ Well, I could use someone
to open these boxes
and add more clothing
to the displays. “
Keisha grabs the box cutter
and busies herself.
“ Oo, this is cute! "
She holds up a floral top.
" Can I try this on? “
“ Go ahead, Keisha. “
She steps out from
the swinging panels
looking marvelous.

A woman with long,
dusty blonde hair
disembarks from a pale
yellow jeep
parked out front.
“ You look good, Keisha. “
The store bell tinkles again.
We all say good morning!
The woman nods
and browses the tables.
Chunji offers her some juice.
She politely says,
“ No, thank you. “
My brown shift dress
covered with pink roses
catches her eye.
Keisha steps forward
still wearing the top.
“ May I find your size for you? “
offers Keisha.
“ I wear a small.
I do not see any … “
the woman's voice trails.
Keisha swiftly reaches
under the display table,
opens the box marked ‘ S ‘
and neatly lays a stack
of dresses
upon the table.
“ How many would you like? “
Keisha asks.
“ May I try this one on? “
The woman looks at me.
Together, me and Keisha
chime, “ Sure! “
Keisha leads her
to a second dressing room.
I hold my breath.
Ten minutes later,
“ I’ll take it. “
( Thank you, Jesus! )
Chunji offers his arm
and rings the woman up.
I suddenly remember
the pretty tropical
shopping bags
that arrived yesterday.
I hold one open for Chunji.
“ Thank you for shopping
at Island Breeze.
We welcome you back. “
I almost sing to the woman.
She nods again.
We hear the roar of her jeep
driving away.
Inside the store,
happy dances all around.

Chapter Two
I return to my now
warmed plate of shrimp.
Keisha retrieves her personal
items from Dressing Room 1.
Her cellphone rings.
“ Hello? Hello? “
“ Hola, bebé. “
“ Alvaro? I know you are not
calling me with your married self! “
“ Alvaro single. “
“ How so? “
“ María estaba tan empeñada
en tener una quinceañera! “
“ Stop! Speak English. “
“ So, I let her go to Mexico
and finally have her quinceañera!
We are both from the same city.
I visited the old homes
and to see the town doctor
about my foot.
I asked him
how was Maria’s pregnancy
coming along,

because at her age,
she had to see him
before they would
allow her to participate
in a quinceañera.
“ Dr. Hernandez looked at me
and laughed.
‘ He said what pregnancy? ‘
Maria faked a baby, Keisha,
so I had the marriage annulled,
since I never touched her,
when I thought she was pregnant.
I am as clean as Joseph!
I left her in Mexico
with all her sisters.
So how about you and me,
again, Keisha? “
Keisha lets loose
a tirade of expletives at Alvaro!
“ Whoa, bebé. “
Keisha is crying.
“ Alvaro, you and Maria
ruined our lives!
So much has happened. “
“ What with your African lover?
I heard he also plucked himself
a real stripper! ( laughing ) “
“ She is not a stripper.
Anyway, I do not even
have the kids anymore. “
Alvaro interrupts.
“ What happened, Keisha?! “
asks a now angry Alvaro.
“ I couldn’t afford them
without you.
We went to court
and everything!
I released the children
to Big Mama.
She hit it big in Vegas.
They awarded them all to her.
You know, I used to be
in the surrogate business. “
Alvaro shoots an expletive back
at Keisha and hangs up!
Keisha so angry
and a bit confused
pushes the two swinging doors
of the dressing room open
like a gun slinger.
Chunji has accepted a crate
of fresh fruit from the locals.
“ Fruit, Keisha? “
Keisha grabs a cantaloupe
and the new butcher knife gift
from the table.
She dashes to the store’s
employee break area
in the yard.
Meanwhile, I decide to go
inside the store.
Chunji, perplexed, is standing
and holding the crate.
“ Oh, fresh fruit! “ I exclaim.
I am hungry.
Chunji nods toward the
open front door.
We both yell at Keisha to stop!
She is chopping so hard
and fast,
that a plank drops
from the wooden picnic table
and falls to the ground.

Chapter Three
“ What is the matter, Jabari? “
a worried looking Sonia asks.
“ My ex girlfriend is also
on the island to support
the opening of Ms. Joyelle’s store. “
“ You mean Keisha. “
“ How do you know her name? “
“ I know people. “
Jabari, wearing a white linen
man’s suit by GUCCI,
rises from the outdoor
chaise lounge chair
on their patio suite.
“ I am not feeling well.
I think we will stay in today. “
announces Jabari.
“ What about our invitation
to lunch with the Swartzes? “
“ I’m just not feeling well. “
repeats Jabari.
Disappointed, Sonia grabs
her designer hat.
She is also wearing a
plunge neck lounge, sundress.
“ Where are you going, Sonia? “
“ A girlz gotta work.
I imagine I can reap
big tips in some cafe
on this island,
with all those rich
Europeans around. “
“ I thought you loved me, Sonia. “
“ Does ‘ You want to sit
on your hands for me, Jabari? ‘
sound like love talk to you?
Love has to be cultivated.
It has to grow. “
“ Then do what you must, Sonia.
Here, take your things. “
Jabari picks up her nightgown.
Sonia coolly obliges.
It is a sunny day,
and Sonia is a beautiful woman.
She is immediately granted
an opportunity on Third Street.
It is only early afternoon
but already men
visiting the island
are drinking
and a bit too heavily.
Sonia dances.
It is her very first time
on a club stage.
Things are looking up!
Judging by the cash thrown
at her feet,
Sonia feels that she did good
as a newbie.
She now has to mangle through
crowds of men
standing, though.
This is not like Atlanta!
One guy tries to reach into
her neckline.
Then others try to palm her!
Sonia desperately
makes her way
out to the street
while still clutching
her carry on luggage.
Heaving and breathing,
Sonia spies an
old fashioned decorative
telephone booth.
It is operative!
She remembers the envelope
of cash,
that Jabari gave her
when they first arrived
to the island.
Sonia just shakes her head.
She calls Delta
and books a flight back
to the States.

Chapter Four
In New York,
Delmonica ultimately
makes a decision,

after weeks of contemplating
what manhood means to him.
He has chosen complete
prostate surgery.
Sitting as a captive audience
in front of Dr. Chung,
Delmonico is advised about
possible physical changes
ahead of him.
Delmonica feels more like
he is being read his rights.
A date is scheduled.
Date? The last date he had
was with Keisha.
Something about that
girl he just likes …
Delmonica hurries to make
his subway train.
He purposely sits alone.
A Puerto Rican prostitute
saunters toward his section
and flashes Delmonica
her pubic area.
Delmonica laughs and smiles
at the same time.
“ I guess I still got somethin’ left. “
he cherishes.
On this day,
he hands her a ten dollar bill
and waves her off.
It his stop.
Delmonico deboards
onto the busy street.
A slender mother
talking on a cellphone
pushes a baby carriage
full of twins
right past him.
Delmonico winces a tear
out from the corner
of his eye.
He suddenly realizes
his consequences
concerning children.
His little Italian Mama
would want
to beat him for this!
( He chuckles. )
He decides to call Keisha,
but remembers
she is out of the country.
That was a great kiss,
they had
over spaghetti and meatballs
at Corleone’s on Thursday.
He didn’t tell Keisha
anything, though.
He purposely waited
until she left
to decide what
course of action
to take concerning his life.
Life? It is so precious.
A long-haired model type
whizs by Delmonico
while riding her bike.
She looks back
at him
and winks.
“ Nice tits. “
Delmonico thinks to himself.

( Island Breeze )
Chapter Five

Agent Cindy wheels her jeep
to the beach.

It is unincorporated.
She thinks of
the previous evening.
She wore the dress,
that she purchased
from Island Breeze.
It was quite a different
look for her,
a brown sheath empire dress
with gorgeous pink roses.
At first, she sat alone
at Dimples.
Then some nice recruit
asked to dine with her.
Another gentleman at the bar
offered to buy her a drink.
She felt like she was now
on a roll!
She should have purchased
that little black nightie too
from Ms. Joyelle’s
new lingerie line,
Lace Details,
just in case.
A girl never knows
when she might need it
on this island.
It was nice to feel
like a woman again
and desirable!
After weeks of training
with only women,
she had had enough!
This tropical assignment
was ideal for her!
With no one in sight,
Cindy removes her top
to reveal a yellow bikini bra.
A nice breeze
visits her.
It blows her long hair.
Cindy leans back
upon a British flag
beach blanket
and watches a seagull.
She lays her glock
right beside her hip.
“ Maybe, I can get a quick nap. “
Next time,
I will bring a lunch
and a sun hat.

This heat is beginning to scorch!
( She says to herself. )
Cindy takes off her leather sandals
and wiggles her toes in the sand.

She takes a photo
to put on her Instagram.
Ahh, the good life.
Cindy decides to
remove her bikini top.
Ten minutes later,
she is putting it right back on.
Already, she is red!

She realizes she can
hardly bare up
under the equator sun.
Cindy longs for that
cool breeze again.
It actually shows up
and kisses her face.
She blows a kiss back
and heads to the jeep.

Chapter Six
Keisha recollects herself
and goes back into the store.
She looks apologetically
at me and Chinji.
“ I will buy you another
table set. " she says.
“ When did these come in? “
Keisha handles some black lace lingerie.
“ They were here before
you demolished our break table! “
I chide Keisha.
“ I apologize, Ms. Joyelle.
I will never do it again. “
" I am taking you at your word, Keisha. "
Chinji offers her
some apple guava juice.
“ Thank you, Chinji.
These ‘ Lace Details ’ are nice,
but I don’t even have a man
to see me in one. “
“ You have to
look outside of the store, Keisha.
There are plenty men out there.

In fact, I should escort you
before you venture out.
I can take you around some time,
after closing? “
Keisha agrees.
Later inside Chinji’s van,
Keisha asks him
“ How old are you? “
“ I am sixty eight. “
“ Sixty eight?!
You sure don’t look it. “
“ That is because
I minister to my body every day
You should do the same. “
“ That drink was kind of good. “
Keisha smiles.
“ In the back of this van,
I have an entire arsenal
of nutrients
that will rejuvenate your life. “
Keisha listens.
Chinji witnesses to her
the benefits
of eating to live.
They are now downtown.
Chinji parks.
Keisha strolls the new shops
which are manned by local people.
Chinji walks behind Keisha
like he is her bodyguard.
In minutes,
Keisha has bought
aloe vera juice,
ambunu leaves
to make her own shampoo,
and marshmallow
to condition her hair
from the sun.
Chinji carries her purchases.
An hour and
twenty three minutes later,
they are back in the jeep.
So excited, Keisha
eyes her new sundress,
which was sewn
by an island seamstress!
The neckline is a little plunging,
but it will look nice
on her figure.
~~~
Jabari opens the drapes
inside his hotel suite.
They have been closed for days.
The sun is blinding!
Dried tears have stained
the sides of his face.
“ I come all the way
to this island
and again,
I have no woman. “
Jabari decides to go downtown
and look for Sonia.
Wearing the GUCCI sandals,
that he designed,
Jabari feels like he owns
the block.
He strides by
and nods
at the store keepers.
An open top Yukon
is approaching downtown.
Chinji is test driving it
with Keisha.
Jabari recognizes Keisha!
“ Keisha?! What … “
Jabari waves at her.
The suv speeds up
and vanishes down the road.
Jabari’s cellphone rings.
It is Sonia.
“ Just wanted to let you know,
that I made it back home
to the States, Jabari.
I’m in New York. “
Sonia ends the call.
Chapter Seven
Jabari stands
on the sidewalk stunned.
Keisha did not wave back.
Corrine from Lotus Life Resort
is passing out flyers
on the downtown street.
She extends one to Jabari.
He looks at the peach colored paper.
“ I am staying there already. “
he tells her.
“ I apologize for not
recognizing you
as one of our guests, Sir.
May I have your name? “
“ I am Jabari. “ he offers.
“ Mr. Jabari,
the resort provides
free rejuvenation
and counseling sessions
every Thursday at 10 a.m.
Please attend.
I see the dried tears
at the corners of your eyes.
We could be useful to you. “
Jabari shoots Corrine
an angry look.
The next day,
Corrine arrives early
to lower bamboo shades
and to prepare the Mango Room
for attendees.
Finally, one guest arrives,
it is Jabari.
He makes a kingly entrance.
“ Good morning, Mr. Jabari
and welcome! “
“ Good morning.
Where should I sit? “
“ We are sitting on mats today. “
Jabari dressed in a long
men’s silk caftan by GUCCI complies.
“ Mr. Jabari,
let’s take off our sandals. “
He does.
“ Next, we stretch long
and hard
all the way
from our eyes
to our feet
until it reaches
the toes. “
Jabari tries.
“ May I call you ‘ Jabari ’ ? “
He nods.
“ Watch how I do it again, Jabari.
See how movement
is caused in every toe? “
Jabari delights in his success.
“ Inhale deeply.
Hold it!
Now exhale.
And again. “
They breathe in unison.
After thirty minutes
of body restoration,
Corrine begins counseling.
Twenty-three minutes into it,
Jabari finally opens up.
He then mentions Keisha.
Corrine listens intently
and in length
as Jabari divulges.
He fights tears
this time.
Corrine shares wise counsel
which surprisingly,
Jabari accepts.
At the end of the session,
Jabari reaches into a
woven basket
and retrieves his
Scripture for The Day.
Releasing a thin satin ribbon,
Jabari undoes the tiny scroll
and reads,
“ He who finds a wife
finds a good thing
and obtains favor
from the Lord. “
Chapter Eight
Chinji goes to his van
and does his daily teletype check.
‘ There is a hurricane warning
for the entire island.
All residents must
report inside to
the huge hangar,
‘ Banana Paradise ‘
by noon today! ‘
Chinji’s hands begin to shake.
He rushes back into
my Island Breeze store.
“ Everybody listen up! “
Chinji warns me
and a customer.
He reads the urgent message.
We stand in awe.
~
Keisha extends her limbs
in a great stretch.
It is late morning.
She notices that
the long, white linen
curtains in the room
are dancing with a wind.
She eyes a sheet of paper,
that someone has slide
under her hotel door.
“ The bill. “
Keisha announces.
She laughs.
“ It is already paid for. “
Keisha chunks
what is really
a written storm warning
and urgent procedures
on top of the television
without reading it.
After a quick shower,
she heads downtown
for the first time, alone.
“ I got to get me some
of that sea moss gel
to get rid of this frizz. “
she tells herself.
Downtown, there is not
a soul in sight!
It is a new town,
and there are pretty pastel
shutters everywhere
in various colors.
“ I forgot it is Sunday.
The stores are all closed.
These people must be religious. “
A strong gust
snatches Keisha’s
official Lotus Life cap
right off of her head.
“ That was rude! “
she yells.
Waves of air
seemingly push her forward.
Minute sand particles
from out of nowhere
brush against her eyes
and mouth.
Someone on a loud speaker
is shouting in the distance.
Keisha cannot make out
what he is saying,
only that he repeats
“ the yellow hangar,
the yellow hangar! “
As Keisha rounds a corner,
she is met with a gentle
island breeze.
She follows it.
~
Inside, the hangar,
Jabari searches everywhere
for Keisha.
He even calls her cellphone.
There is no answer.
A Swedish woman
and her two young children
are arriving.
There are water droplets
on their adorable raincoats.
As they enter,
Jabari grabs a
complimentary umbrella
and dashes out, unseen.
He pops it open
and a fierce wind
promptly inverts it.
Jabari lets it fly off.
He makes it to
the beginning of Third Street.
And there is Keisha,
soaking wet
and clinging tightly to a
street light pole, crying.
Jabari grabs for her hand,
but Keisha does not want to
release her hold.
“ Trust me, Keisha!
I will get us to the hangar.
It is right down the street! “
Jabari commands.
Keisha understands.
She is not able to run
quick enough
against the force
of the wind, though.
Jabari grabs Keisha
and carries her,
like he used to do
for his village’s
crippled elder in Nigeria.
They make it to
Banana Hangar.
However, the huge door
is slid closed.
Jabari pounds rapudly
with his fists!
Keisha thinks to call herself
on her cellphone.
In minutes,
a burly Irish man
opens the door part way
but with effort.
The electricity is off on the island.
Together, he and Jabari
exert muscle
and make enough room
for the wet pair
to slide in to safety.
Chapter Nine
The phone rings.
Delmonico hurriedly picks it up.
“ Hi, Keisha? “
answers a hopeful Delmonico.
“ Nooo. This is Beth.
I was supposed to meet
with you
before you were released
from the hospital today.
How are you feeling,
Mr. Delmonico? “
“ Sleepy. I just took
my first painkiller. “
“ I’ll let you get some rest,
but I will be checking
on you regularly. “
“ Will you be sending over
hot soup, too,
like my mother would? “
Delmonico laughs.
“ Oh, I can do better than that.
I can bring it over.
In fact, this is what
Dr. Chung prefers. “
“ Surgery. Now, I am
an instant charity case. “
“ Not charity,
Mr. Delmonico.
It would be my pleasure. “
“ How much pleasure
could that be?
I feel like I’ve been
through a wreck. “
“ Well, how much
is up to you,
Mr. Delmonico. “
“ How so? “
“ Well, I can provide
levels of service,
Mr. Delmonico. “
“ What is Level 1?
You measure out
all my pills
for me? “ he jokes.
“ Sure. “ she answers.
“ And Level 2? “
he inquires.
“ I feed you each one! “
Delmonico exhales
and takes in a deep breath.
“ I think I am beginning
to understand,
but you’ve never met me.
I could be bald
with stinky socks. “
“ Oh, contraire!
I am looking at
your photograph, right now. “
( nervous chuckles )
“ What is Door #3 like? “
“ Well first, you open it? “
she offers.
“ Like on Arthur Avenue? “
“ Like on Arthur Avenue,
thirteenth floor. “
“ Send me your photo, Beth. “
( after seconds )
“ Is this really you?! “
“ Oh, it is so me. “
“ You are freakin beautiful! “
“ Thank you, Mr. Delmonico.
I just need to know when
and what time. “
“ I need you now,
but see,
my equipment
is all busted up,
to be honest, Nurse Beth. “
“ I know all about it.
That is where
I come in. “
There is a brief silence.
Delmonico ponders.
He checks his texts.
Keisha never responded.
“ I could just use a friend today. “
he says.
“ I am hoping for more
than that,
but ‘friend’ is a good start. “
“ Come now. “ he says.
“ I’m bringing da soup! “
she says.
The End
